KKH lower section

Besham — Dasu — Chilas

Caution

This stretch forms the middle portion of the Karakoram Highway, connecting Besham through Dasu to Chilas. It runs through some of the most rugged terrain on the entire KKH, cutting along steep river gorges above the Indus. This is historically the most landslide and rockfall-prone section of the whole Islamabad-Gilgit journey, with occasional road-widening and dam-related construction work near Dasu adding to delays. Travelers on this stretch should always check current conditions before departure, and avoid night driving given the narrow, winding sections with limited visibility.
