Karakoram Highway (KKH)

Caution

The Karakoram Highway connects Islamabad to Gilgit, covering approximately 600 km through Abbottabad, Mansehra, Besham, and Chilas before reaching Gilgit city. The journey typically takes 14-18 hours by road, though most travelers break it into two days with an overnight stop in Besham or Chilas. This route is considered one of the most scenic mountain highways in the world, running alongside the Indus River through dramatic gorges and high peaks. The stretch between Besham and Chilas is the most landslide-prone section, especially during monsoon season (July-August) and spring snowmelt. Road conditions can change quickly, so checking current status before departure is strongly recommended.
